Who We Are
BNSF Railway is one of the largest railroads in North America, serving the western two-thirds of the United States and three Canadian provinces. BNSF is the product of nearly 400 different railroad lines that merged or were acquired over the course of 160 years – culminating in 1996 with the merger of the Burlington Northern Railroad and Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. In 2010, BNSF became part of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc.
While many different railroads combined to form BNSF, the people who worked at those railroads shared many traits. The people who built BNSF were — and continue to be — a unique breed, blending the forward-thinking of dreamers with the pragmatism of results-oriented business leaders. This heritage played a central role in settling and growing the American West, and today, BNSF continues to have a significant impact in meeting the needs of shippers and keeping the U.S. economy moving.
BNSF team members drive the railroad’s success. We pride ourselves on the talent and diversity that our 35,000 employees bring to BNSF. Our work is important to our customers, our families, our communities and our country. We hire the best, keep them engaged, empower them to do what’s right and invest in their professional development and well-being.
Safety is the most important thing we do at BNSF. Our safety vision is a workplace free of accidents and injuries. To achieve this vision, we strive to continuously improve safety through training, education, innovation and investment. One way we promote safety is through our Approaching Others program, which encourages employees to approach co-workers about safe behaviors and practices. BNSF also promotes safety within our communities. We’ve helped train more than 10,000 first responders in communities across the rail network. Thanks to our employees’ commitment, BNSF is a safety leader in the rail industry.
BNSF places a high value on creating and maintaining a diversified workforce and has been widely recognized with industry awards and honors. Our awards include being recognized as an outstanding and diverse work environment, top employer for U.S. military veterans and a great place to work for information technology professionals. We recognize the importance of people’s experiences, education, skills and ideas across our workforce. This diversity of thought helps us continue to be one of the most successful railroads in North America.
